Can You Foster a Dog or Cat? |
|
The need for
foster "parents" to homeless animals is enormous at the shelter. There
are pregnant dogs and cats who need to deliver their litters in safety
and comfort; and the offspring needs to stay with the mother till they
are weaned. There are frightened, emaciated animals who have never known
the warmth of a home or the love of a human. There are injured or ill
animals who need convalescence. There are old animals who need to spend
the short time that they have left somewhere other than in a metal and
concrete cage. And there are animals whose fate remains murky during
drawn out court proceedings who lie listless and depressed for countless
weeks, months and even years.
We see all
of these situations and more at the Washington Area Humane Society.
Foster homes give animals a huge advantage by providing a nurturing
environment where they can be socialized, overcome health and
behavioral problems and avoid the stress of the kennels.
If you can
help for a few days, a few weeks or a longer period, we implore you to
sign up as a foster parent.
For more
information on fostering, please call Jeannie at 724-225-9898.

A Bag of Special Potato and Duck Dogfood Will be a Big Help |
As each
animal enters the shelter, they bring a history that might be a
mystery if they come in as strays. Our vet techs try to identify the
weak, the ill or those with special needs due to allergies. We
routinely have a few dogs who require special food to help them
improve or regain health and vitality. We would like to continue to
feed them Dick Van Patton's (Hypo-Allergenic) Natural Balance Potato
and Duck dog food and we are running low. Please bring us a
bag of this special food for some of our special dogs. It is
available at most major pet food stores.

They Came, They Saw, We Conquered! |
| |
 |
|
If you didn't show up you missed a great party! Eight special guests
from Zootoo toured WAHS on April 15th, the sixth shelter of the twenty
finalists in the quest for a million dollar shelter makeover. Signs,
balloons, streamers, food, local politicians and incredible volunteer
and staff participation made it an unforgettable day.

Please Help Share the Load for
Zeke and Tinsel |
| |

Zeke was so handsome and buff, it was
astonishing to hear that he had ticking time bomb inside. The sleek
black lab mix came to WAHS as a stray and found a home in kennel 21
for his 4-month stay with us. Zeke caught the eye of a family who
wanted to make him their newest member and Zeke proudly walked out
the shelter door for what we hoped would be the last time. But
within his adopt-to-foster grace period the vet confirmed he had
heartworm. Although treatable, heartworm can be deadly. Zeke has had
his first treatment which includes a period of very limited
activity. He will be retested in 30 days and may require another
treatment at that time. The estimated cost of the treatment that our
shelter is providing for Zeke (since Zeke is still considered our
responsibility until adoptions are final), is approximately $550.00. |
|

It has been very sad for
Tinsel's foster mom and everyone at the shelter, but Tinsel' s tiny
heart just could no longer do its job and Tinsel was humanely
euthanized. Just a wisp of a kitten, the 9-month old was surrendered to us last November with an
upper respiratory infection. She was very weak and after weeks of
antibiotics and slow growth, it was discovered that her circulation
was poor. A cardiology specialist, performed and ultrasound on her little heart
which showed she had Tetralogy
of Fallot — three birth defects in her heart. She was on medicine to
help her heart pump more efficiently, and she continued to need blood work
every 2 weeks. Tinsel was a sweet lovable, but very sick kitten. She remained in her loving foster home
where she enjoyed the best possible life that she could ever have.
Thank you for helping her and the shelter with your donations.. |
