Welcome to the Second Chance LeagueThe Second Chance League is a group of Fairbanks mushers focused on finding permanent homes for sled dogs. SCL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We work with dogs exclusively from the municipal animal shelter in Fairbanks, evaluate them, foster them, and train them with our own dog teams. Many of these dogs have excellent bloodlines. Our goal is for the dogs to be successful. We strive to match the right dog to the right owner. Latest news

Februrary Update
What a whacky winter we are having here in Fairbanks. Little snow makes mushing and skijoring a challenge and it seems to me that although we haven't had a severely cold winter it has been consistantly below zero lately with little warm up over the last few weeks. The shelter has been relatively quiet with sled dogs until recently. Now the back yard is filling up and a lot of great dogs are there now. If you are thinking of getting a dog, now might be the time. We had our annual meeting in January and we thank all of the board members for coming out on one of the 40 below nights. That is dedication! Without our great board behind SCL we couldn't do what we are doing. Our next board meeting will be February 9th at Sipping Streams Tea House (on College Road under Wok and Roll) at 6 pm. Saturday, November 7, 2009
Happy Winter!
Hopefully we will get some more snow and be able to get out on our sleds and skiis. It has been a warmer than normal and drier than normal late fall. We have been quite happy that not too many dogs have come into our shelter. But we have had some super nice dogs adopted through our shelter and then brought back. This is always sad to see the dogs go to their new homes and then come back 3 weeks later. People realize that huskies and the pointer mixes are smart and need more stimulation than a 15 minute walk around the block each day. If you are interested in any of our adoptable dogs, now is the time to adopt. Winter is just beginning so now is the time to get a new dog to start out and have fun with in our glorious outdoors. October Update
Fairbanks is certainly having an extended fall. This time last year there was snow on the ground and we were looking forward to a snowy winter. So far. only flurries in the forecast but we are hoping for the snow goddesses to bring us the white stuff! The shelter has seen few sled dogs being turned in. This is good for us...we don't like to see the backyard of the shelter totally full! We are hoping that people are working more with their dogs and coming to the realization that the dogs aren't farm animals to be cast off when their "work" is done. Our next board meeting will be in November. Time and place to be announced later. Wednesday, September 9, 2009
Welcome to Fall!
We all get excited when that nip is in the air, the leaves are turning their glorious colors and the dogs are getting restless to RUN. It has been a busy summer at the shelter and many great dogs are available now. SCL continues to run dogs and tries to find foster or permanent homes for them. Many dogs are adopted directly from our shelter but we continue to be successful pulling dogs into SCL and finding homes this way. It is always rewarding being a foster "parent" and working with a dog to see it go to a wonderful home. We encourage people to become foster parents and if you are interested please give us a call or an email! Our next board meeting is Tuesday September 15th at Taco King in Fairbanks. 6 pm. Change in Weather
All mushers, skijorers and winter enthusiasts can feel that cooler breeze flowing through Fairbanks signaling the coming of winter and the fun of our winter sports! Now is a great time to add a dog to your team or household. They can get settled in and spayed or neutered and ready for the start of fall running. There are a lot of really nice dogs at the shelter right now. Some need a little TLC but they all love to run. Many are very personable and get along with other dogs. Please stop by the shelter and see if there is a dog that grabs your heartstrings! This is the perfect time of the year for a new dog. |
DONATIONS NEEDEDWith more dogs entering our program each day, our medical cost (spay, neuter, microchip, medications, etc.) are rising.
