Meet Melvin.
His story:
The survivor.
Found in the street in West Palm Beach, this guy spent 6 weeks at the shelter before arriving into rescue.
He has been xrayed and they showed multiple pelvic fractures of unknown origin. We need funds to cover the future
expenses needed for more tests. He is in no obvious signs of pain or distress. He can ambulate (walk) for brief periods with a scissor-type gait. He can stand briefly,
also with a scissoring of his back legs. He runs better than he walks. He hates his cart, but will let you put him in it. He prefers to walk/slide around the tile & carpet. I carry him over any concret or outdoor tile surface.
Melvin is a sweet boy who is very laid back, just wants to hang with his humans. Gentle kisses abound. He really looks for a good meal, he is thin, at 12 lbs. He
is completely housetrained, and will slide to the door to let you know that he wants out. He is a beautiful cafe-au-lait & chocolate phantom
poodle.
He loves to chase tennis balls. Quite comical actually. I would have bet money that he couldn't pick up that tennis ball in that little
mouth, but boy he sure does! Fetch & retrieve. At just two years of age, he has many good years ahead of him. He is own best physical therapist. He can't be in any pain, he just scoots around everywhere. I have seen improvement in this gait in the short time he has been here. We are going to try water therapy in the tub.
2/26/07- He sees the vet again next week, will have an update soon.
July 2007 - Melvin was adopted and here is a note from his new mom: I have been meaning to write to you to let you
know how great Melvin is doing--what a great dog he is. My vet
agreed that he will continue to build muscle in his back legs; he
is so active here chasing lizards around the yard you would not even
know he has a problem! He can now stand up on back legs with front
legs on sofa, not for long but he is getting better at it. He is
also very social and has quite a personality, he does like to pile my
shoes up from time to time. He is also very vocal not barking but
talking; just an all around great dog. Thank You for him.
