Pledge
for Adopters
adapted
from Sue Sternberg's Pledge for New Adopters
I pledge to make
a reasonable commitment of time and effort and to make
appropriate lifestyle changes so this relationship
works.
I pledge to make
sure my pet has proper shelter, shade, dry ground,
access to fresh water and at least an hour of loving
companionship and play each day.
I pledge to keep
this pet indoors at night and to include him in the
activities of the household while I am home.
I pledge to provide
appropriate and timely medical care for the life of
my pet, to provide her with the proper nutrition, to
keep her the proper weight, and to spay or neuter my
pet.
I pledge to keep
my pet groomed.
I pledge to give
him ample aerobic exercise daily and make sure that
at least three times a week he gets to run and play
until he's tired.
I pledge to provide
my pet with mental stimulation in the form of either
play, interactive toys, fun training, or off territory
walks each day.
I pledge to provide
my pet with enough training so she will be welcome
in my home and community.
I pledge to provide
a home in which my pet knows there are consistent rules
on which I will insist.
I pledge to provide
my pet with enough toys to satisfy his urge to chew
(dogs) or scratch (cats).
I pledge to get
professional help if my pet develops a behavior problem
and to manage my pet carefully so as not to endanger
others.
I pledge
to do everything I can to keep my pet from becoming
a nuisance, she will not run free out of my control.
I will seek help to keep her quiet if she disturbs
by neighbors. I will "scoop poop" so she
will be welcome in public.
I pledge that
if I have to move for any reason, I will commit to
moving with my pet, like any other family member, even
though finding pet-friendly housing can take longer.
