MUM Sheepdog Prison Tails Logo

Prison Tails (PT), is the award winning program that trains men and dogs to be better members of society.

Dogs and offenders are partnered 24 hours a day.  Dogs learn basic obedience through repetition and positive reinforcement.  Offenders learn the values that many of us take for granted.

Elements of this rehabilitative program include required reading, classroom instruction and discussion, writing and report presentation, as well as visiting speakers and experts.

Volunteers from MUM visit Westville Correctional Facility’s (WCF) medium security complex weekly for training sessions. And now we have a full time staff member dedicated to overseeing the program on-site.

Through special arrangements with the AKC, dogs receive Canine Good Citizen certification. Offenders also receive recognition from AKC, Mixed Up Mutts and Westville.

In 2005, Prison Tails was awarded "Program Of The Year" by the Indiana Department of Corrections and  the first ever Outstanding Program Award from the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Program.
