The Humane Society of Clinton County strives to engage in responsible adoption practices in order to protect the welfare of animals within our custody and to set a standard and example of care and concern for animals in general.
  • HSCC adopts animals to self-sufficient adults who demonstrate that they are responsible persons and can give adequate assurances that they intend to provide proper care for an animal’s entire life. Proper care includes:
    • Proper diet and fresh water.
    • Adequate shelter.
    • Routine and emergency veterinary care.
    • Providing pets with proper identification and necessary license.
    • Adequate training and supervision.
    • Daily exercise and companionship.
  • Animals are only adopted to residences where pets are allowed.

  • Cats that are or will be declawed will only be adopted to homes that intend on keeping the animal as an indoor pet.

  • HSCC will not knowingly adopt any animal to:

    • any person with a known history of animal abuse or neglect.
    • any person, facility or institution for research purposes, or experimentation.
    • be used as an attack guard dog.
    • be given to another person as a gift.

  • An adoptive family must agree to have the animal spayed and neutered as soon as the animal is mature enough to allow for surgery.

  • The shelter staff will place a follow-up telephone call to check on the animal and confirm that the owner has made an appointment for the animal’s spay/neuter surgery (where applicable). If the Society is not satisfied with the conditions, the animal will be returned to the shelter.

  • The HSCC makes no guarantee to the temperament or health of any animal.

  • When an animal is surrendered, the person surrendering the animal will be required to fill out a surrender paper detailing the reasons for the surrender.
