MCHS is proud to announce the kick off of the "Death Row Dogs" program at Green River Correctional Complex. Our shelter will be sending dogs to the prison to live for an INTENSIVE 7 weeks of obedience training. Death Row Dog graduates will be house trained, leash trained and know basic commands. This program is very similar to the TV show "Cell Dogs" that airs on Animal Planet channel. Donations are needed to help fund this program. Please call MCHS to make a tax deductible donation to the program. Volunteers are also needed for this program ( groomers, vets etc).

Who We Are

The Humane Society is an independent, non-profit agency in Muhlenberg County to licensed to operate an animal shelter We are currently located in a block building that we moved into in 1985. The Humane Society is not a department of city or county government. The county owns the shelter building.

The Humane Society receives VERY limited funds from the county to operate the shelter. We are budgeted to receive $15,000 from the county. This funding barely covers employee salaries, and does not cover utility bills, cleaning supplies/chemicals, euthanasia solution, cat litter, fuel for rescue vehicles and building repairs/maintenance.

DONATIONS from concerned citizens like you pay for medical care of sick and injured animals, upkeep of animal cages, incidental supplies such as cat/dog treats, toys for the animals at the shelter and safety equipment for our employees.

The Humane Society's mission is to provide a clean comfortable shelter for homeless, abused, lost and impounded animals in our community; to place as many of these animals as possible in loving and responsible homes and humanely euthanize those not adopted; to investigate complaints of animal abuse/neglect; and to educate the public about responsible care of companion animals. Educating the public about the importance of spay/neuter is our NUMBER ONE GOAL!!!

Adopting a friend

We welcome out of state adopters. However, we do not arrange transport for adopted animals. Transport services are available through other agencies. All adopters MUST come to the shelter in person to fill out a contract and pick up their new family member. Our adoption fees are as follows: DOGS: $65.50. PUPPIES (Under 3 months of age): $55.00 This covers spay/neuter, which can now be done on juvenile pups. Free health check, any shots or worming are 1/2 off. CATS/KITTENS: $49.00 This covers spay/neuter, rabies shot ,a free health check and 1/2 off any shots or worming.
