Euthanasia - Definition from the Free Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

Etymology: Greek, easy death, from euthanatos, from eu- + thanatos death

Euthanasia: the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy

First: There is nothing painless or easy in the way pets are killed in most Louisiana pounds. They are placed in a gas chamber where they suffocate to death. In some pounds, cats are put with dogs, small dogs with large dogs, and they all fight between themselves for the last breath of air.

Second: The great majority of pets killed in gas chambers are not sick or injured. They are perfectly healthy but it is easier to kill them than to care for them and find new homes for them. This is not merciful, this is just a matter of convenience.

Placing pets in gas chambers is referred to as "euthanasia", but it's not: it is "killing". Is this humane? What can YOU do?

SENATE BILL NO. 73

The Louisiana 2010 Regular Legislative Session began on 3/29 and ends on 6/21.

SENATE BILL NO. 73 BY SENATOR HEITMEIER is a bill which will change the way that "unwanted" shelter animals are killed. Bill 73 is:

"An act to amend and reenact R.S. 3:2465(C), relative to operating procedures for animal shelters;
to prohibit euthanasia by carbonmonoxide gas chambers on cats and dogs beginning on January 1, 2015 and thereafter;
to prohibit euthanasia by intracardiac injection on a conscious animal; and to provide for related matters."

To read the text of Senate Bill 73, go to http://legis.state.la.us/billdata/streamdocument.asp?did=683722

Use of a chamber is inhumane and intracardiac injection on a conscious animal is extremely painful. Not only are healthy, adoptable animals killed, but it is done in a barbaric, outdated and painful manner. THIS IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE THIS!

Please contact your Senator and Representatives and ask them to vote for this bill to succeed. Also ask the effective date to be changed from 01/2015 to 06/2011. Why wait 3 1/2 years? How many more animals would be killed in that barbaric way during this time? This is really important to homeless animals. To find out who to contact go follow this:
