Fostering Shelter Animals

Some pets cannot stay at the shelter and need to be placed with  a loving family while in our care.   Kittens need to be kept away from the adult cats to build strength and immunity.  Also, space is limited at the shelter so we need foster families to take these animals into a loving environment while we work on providing the necessary medical care and finding permanent loving homes for these abandoned animals.  At this time, we are especially in need of foster homes for mother cats and their kittens.  The spring kitten season is beginning and we have no room at the shelter to house these kittens.

Please answer these questions along with completing the volunteer application for consideration to foster a momma cat and kittens.

  1. Where do you live? Is it somewhere close so we can check in on them?
  2. Do you have a room they can have for their own? The  shelter will loan you a crate to keep them in.
  3. Do you have any other animals? This will not effect your approval but will help us give advice on how to  manage things.
  4. Is there someone to watch them? Nature takes care of itself - moms can deliver on their own and care for the kittens. We sometimes need to help out. ( If you live close by we can be called once she gives birth to the first one).  If the birthing process is too much we can move 1-2 week old moms and the babies to your house and put the expecting moms in a more experienced house. Our goal is to keep the kittens out of the shelter so they do not get sick - they are like babies - no immune system when born - they get it from their mother's milk.
  5. Are you available on Saturdays to bring the kittens to the shelter for adoptions and then pick up those not adopted?

All dogs & puppies receive a physical exam, rabies shot, parvovirus shot, distemper shot, spaying/neutering, heartworm and seasonal flea & tick preventative, and worming (puppies only).

All of our kittens receive a physical exam and first set of shots.  Adult cats receive a physical exam, shots with rabies vaccination, combo test for FIV/FELV, and are either spayed or neutered.  Flea treatment, ear cleaning and nail trimming are included in the adoption fee for both cats and kittens.

The Friends of Attleboro Animal Shelter (FAAS) is a non-profit, all volunteer 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing financial and volunteer support to the Attleboro Animal Shelter for the care and well-being of the hundreds of unwanted, stray and needy cats and dogs that annually pass through the shelter.  On a daily basis, our volunteers provide these homeless cats and dogs with nourishment, medical treatment, affection, and most of all, help in finding a loving new home.
