Who We Are

The Steele County Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, comprised of one paid employee and approximately 25 community volunteers. As indicated in our mission statement, our organization is dedicated to the following tasks:

    1. Providing quality foster care for stray cats and dogs in the rural Steele County area. We occasionally will take surrendered animals, but only if space allows. Strays are our priority.
    2. Encouraging the adoption of homeless cats and dogs.
    3. Encouraging the spaying and neutering to reduce the pet overpopulation.
    4. Assisting in the enforcement of the laws for prevention of cruelty to animals and to aid district and county societies and agencies in the enforcement of such laws.
    5. Assisting in the organization of district and county societies and give them representation in any state federation for the humane and ethical treatment of animals.
    6. Providing education to the general public on humane and ethical treatment of animals.
    7. Bringing together and supporting others interested in developing the humane treatment and care of animals.

Come Visit Us!

The Steele County Humane Society does not have a shelter. All our pets stay at loving foster homes in the community until we find permanent homes for them. Potential adopters are very welcome to meet our animals in their foster home environment.

If you are interested in meeting an animal posted on our website, just contact us by phone (507-451-4512) or email (adoptapetschs@yahoo.com). We will provide you with the name and phone number of the animal's foster family, and you can set up a time to meet the pet at the foster home. You may also complete an application at that time, and adopt the animal directly from the foster home.

Our foster families try to be flexible when scheduling visits, so that our animals have every opportunity to be adopted. Nights and weekends are usually not a problem.
