The Steele County Humane Society has no shelter - we rely totally on foster homes. They are a big part of our organization. We have many animals that need help, and our foster homes are overflowing. Fostering is a great way to volunteer if you love animals. Since most foster homes are already responsible for other pets, all foster animals are vet-checked, wormed, and given first vaccinations prior to placements in foster homes, minimizing any problem of transmitting diseases. Because many homeless pets have been on their own too long, they are often thin and vulnerable to illnesses. However, once they get good food, warmth, and some love, they bounce back quickly. Foster homes provide care and love. They need to be willing to bring pets to their vet appointments and to Adoption Days (one Saturday afternoon a month). Pets are adopted either at Adoption Days or when potential guardians visit the animal at the foster home. The Steele County Humane Society provides veterinary care, food, leashes and collars, food bowls, carriers, etc., almost anything needed by a foster home. If for some reason a family or individual is not ready to commit to lifetime guardianship of a pet, or if they already have pets and extra love to give, fostering is a great way to care for homeless animals. Bringing back a scared, undernourished pet to a happy, confident one is very rewarding. Matching that pet to a new loving home is a joy beyond words! The biggest “problem” we hear from people is, “What if I can’t give up my foster pet?” Well, then you adopt your foster pet and become the lifetime guardian. Keeping a beloved pet is not a problem, it’s a happy ending. To become a foster home, please call the Steele County Humane Society at 507-451-4512. Help us to “speak for those who cannot speak for themselves” by fostering a SCHS cat or dog. |
