ADOPTION....are you ready?

There are many things to consider prior to adopting a pet:

  1. Do I truly want a dog?
    • Or am I adopting a pet mostly for my children or significant other when I KNOW they have other distractions in their lives ... and I KNOW I'll be the primary caregiver?
    • If you do not have children, will your pet still be welcome if and when you decide to have children?

  2. Do I have enough time to care for a dog or puppy?
    • Dogs require exercise, bathroom breaks and human interaction. A cat may be a better companion for a person that travels regularly or works long hours.
      • Do I have the time and patience for puppy? Puppies need to get out, on the average, once every X hours per months they are old (i.e., a 4 month old puppy needs to get out every 4 hours).
      • Would an adult dog be a better choice? An adult can go the length of a workday without accidents. They are, generally, past the chewing stage and have better manners; calmer around children.

  3. Do I possess the financial resources necessary to provide veterinary care, quality food, chew toys and supplies for a canine family member?
    • On average, it costs $1000 per year to own a dog.

  4. What do I know about this breed?
    • Please, please, please...research the breed of dog that you are looking to adopt. Bull breeds ARE different from other dogs and you need to be able to control their head strong nature.
    • Make sure that this is the breed of dog for you by taking a breed match survey on one of the following sites:

  5. If you are adopting a puppy, will you be comfortable with the adult size of the dog that you are adopting?
