Fees & General Information
Our adoption fee is $60, which includes spay/neuter, dewormings, vaccinations (including rabies shot), and a microchip ID. If you use the PayPal link on our site to pay your adoption fee, the amount is $65, which covers the fees MCAR is charged when PayPal is used for payment. Our vets spay and neuter both puppies and kittens. Some of our available pets are already altered. You can take your pet home with you right away! Some pets may require spay/neuter upon adoption.
All pets are spayed or neutered before adoption. No exceptions.
PLEASE NOTE:
If you are planning to adopt an animal from the Mitchell County Animal Rescue, you should fax a completed adoption contract to the shelter (fax number: (828) 765-6765). The staff will then contact you and authorize payment. DO NOT SUBMIT PAYMENT VIA PAYPAL BEFORE RECEIVING AUTHORIZATION TO DO SO FROM THE STAFF!
Adoption Contract
In order to adopt a pet from MCAR, you must fill out an adoption contract and submit it. The contract is an Adobe Acrobat PDF file which requires the FREE Adobe Reader software, available here.
Out Of Area Adoptions
Yes, we do adopt out of our area. No, we can not ship animals to you. If you are traveling to meet a shelter pet, please make arrangements before you make the trip. Call the shelter at (828) 765-6952 to make sure the pet is still available.
Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Programs For The Pet You Already Own

We work through The Humane Alliance in Asheville. They do only spay/neuter surgery and preformed over 21,000 surgeries last year.
Your pet's appointment will be on another day. We can provide a crate for your pet to travel in. You will bring your dog or cat to the shelter at 8 a.m. one day. The Humane Alliance will come in a climate controlled transport van to transport to Asheville. Surgery will be done that day. Your pet will get a snack when he wakes up and get supper that night and will stay in the hospital. The next day your pet will be back at Mitchell County Animal Shelter.
Puppies and kittens over 8 weeks old that weigh over 2 1/2 pounds can be spayed or neutered.
The Humane Alliance is a great program and we are lucky to have this service available in our area. It is a model for other clinics across the US. We toured the facility and have sent our own pets there. Please call us at 765-6952 if you have any questions.
