Captain

This is an actual copy of all the updates on Captain, beginning the day he entered rescue. We were pleasantly surprised that he turned out as well as he did considering he wasn't given much hope initially. The links below go to the individual updates; however, we recommend you simply scroll down and follow the whole story. You'll be glad that you did.

Captain the day he entered rescue

Captain was found wandering the streets of rural South Carolina. Homeless and without the love of a human, he survived the best he could. He is presently severely emaciated, and infested with multiple internal parasites.

The worst of these being Heartworms, a deadly infestation if not treated. The treatments are expensive, and Captain is only one of many that we have treated this year. In addition to the heartworm treatment, Captain also needs treatment for all the other internal parasites and entropion surgery.

Entropion surgery is to correct a condition where his eye lids are actually rubbing the cornea of his eyes - a situation that is not only painful, but can cause blindness.

Mid July 08

Captain has received his much needed entropion surgery, the dental, and he is now neutered. Additionally, he is receiving additional treatments for the internal parasites and should be free of all those (with the exception of Heartworms) in the coming days.

Captain

Captain is on a high calorie diet in order to build up his strength and get some much needed weight on the poor boy. Hopefully, in the next few weeks he will be cleared to begin his heartworm treatments.

The funding is not in place at the present time for his treatments, if you could help by donating to him, even a dollar brings us that much closer to being able to get this boy healthy again.

Late July 08

Captain's Silly Hat

Sorry for the long delay in posting these pictures of Captain made earlier this month.

As of the last of July, Captain is still not ready to begin his heartworm treatments. He will be going in to the vet's office next week for an evaluation and possibly starting his heartworm treatments. Keep a paw crossed for him.

Captain aka 'Rocky Raccoon'

His eyes are healing nicely from his entropion and ectropion surgeries, He's even starting to like being called "Rocky Raccoon".

wink

Sadly, we have brought three more dogs into rescue in the past week that are also heartworm positive. Some areas of the county don't have the epidemic of heartworm infestation as we face in the south - but it is still prevalent in all 50 States. . Please have your dog tested and started on heartworm preventative.

Mid August 08

Captain has received his initial heartworm treatment, we should know in a few days just which treatment plan the vets are recommending.

Captain's overall condition has improved so much these past few weeks that he might be a candidate for traditional treatment. Let's all keep a 'paw crossed' for the big guy, maybe just maybe he could be cured of these nasty parasites much sooner.

We'll post an update as soon as we learn. For now, he's doing exceptionally well.

September 08

Captain has successfully completed the last hurdle in getting adopted - his heartworm treatment. The vets recommended placing Captain on a traditional treatment plan due to his much improved condition.

Captain has been approved for adoption and will be leaving rescue later this week and moving into his real forever home. With the help of the Honda Element Owners Club, Captain is being transported to his new home in Vermont this coming weekend, If you happen to see a Honda Element with a big happy saint bernard in back be sure to wave and say Hi to Captain and the volunteers transporting him.

We'll post updates with pictures as soon as the come in, Hopefully we should have some posted late Saturday night or during the day on Sunday.

Once again, we at NCSBR are humbled by those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make certain that a big slobbery dog finds a way to a real forever home.

Without the outpouring of support, this simply could not have happened. May God bless each and every one of you.

Going Home!

EOC

With the help of the Element Owners Club Captain found a way to get home to Vermont.

TS Hanna

Complicating the transport was a Tropical Storm / Hurricane named Hanna. It seems she wanted to follow the same basic route that we did.

But, as fate would have it, Hanna wasn't quite the 'bad girl' that she could have been. The transport went on as scheduled.

Transport route

Those transporting the first day sent in reports of some high winds and standing water in the roads, downed trees, overall poor road conditions, and several accidents along the way. Luckily none of our transport team were involved in any 'incidents'.

Captain was a wonderful 'road dog', and seemed to enjoy the ride in the Honda Elements. (or maybe it was just the thought of going to his 'forever home'? )

Several people took a good part of their weekend and devoted it to making sure Captain found a way home over the weekend, words cannot possibly express how appreciative we are for this help.

Maybe some pictures will..
