Heartworm DiseaseHeartworm disease in dogs is prevalent in all 50 stares. Once just a 'problem' with dogs from the Southern United States. Now, every dog is susceptible to caching this life threatening condition. All it takes is a single bite from an infected mosquito and the family dog is now host to these internal parasites that literally 'squeeze' the life out of a dog. Every dog brought into rescue is tested for this disease and treated (if positive) or placed on a monthly preventative medication. Considering the costs associated with treating a heartworm positive dog and then comparing that to the cost of a monthly preventative it's hard to understand why more dogs are not on a preventative. |
