Molly

This is an actual copy of all the updates on Molly, beginning the day she entered rescue. Molly entered NCSBR in early January of 2007 and quickly formed a bond with all the volunteers in rescue. There was just something special about her, maybe it was her will to live.

The following are the actual notices that were posted about Molly's travels down the road to recovery. Hopefully, it will inspire you the reader as much as it did those of us who were involved in her care.

Molly was pulled from a high kill shelter in North Carolina. The results from her preliminary vet work shows she has an upper respiratory infection, tested HIGH heartworm positive, has parasites, and anemia. She did receive her vaccines, a physical and a blood panel. Her blood work looked pretty good considering.

Molly was spayed shortly after entering rescue. She began the heartworm treatments as soon as she was physically able.

NCSBR would like to thank the community for all the support everyone has show Molly. Without the financial support that has been given, this beautiful dog would not be able to receive the much needed medical care.

For now, NCSBR wants to give a big 'high paw' to all of Molly's Angels.

"A real nail bitter"

Molly is not responding to her medications as well as we had hoped. Please keep Molly in your thoughts and prayers. She has started eating better and is getting up more that she was originally. She is still panting heavily and somewhat lethargic.

We are currently having her condition evaluated by additional veterinarian doctors to determine the best approach to take with her. Our goal is to get this beautiful dog through her heartworm treatments, and it looks like we will have to take a very conservative approach with her. We will keep everyone updated as much as possible. The staff at NCSBR is really quite frightened for her and want her to recover. Sadly, this is going to be a real nail-bitter.

A Rough Road To Travel

Molly is responding better to her medications; however, she is facing a tougher road with her heartworm treatments than the others. She has an appointment for this coming Wednesday, the 24th, for evaluation by the Highland Animal Hospital in Fayetteville. She will be examined and have some testing done and the options evaluated for her treatments. Her blood work looks good, so we are optimistic yet still worried about her recovery from heartworm disease.

On the up side, she is eating well and has not had any breathing issues. She is being kept isolated in order to help keep her calmer, which is recommended because of her condition. She is adjusting well to receiving the royal treatment, ample supply of food and water, but is not quite sure what to make of all the human attention. We wonder how much interaction this sweet thing has actually had in her life. Once she is feeling better it will be easier for her temperament to be evaluated. We ask everyone to continue to keep this sweet girl in their thoughts and prayers.

"We and Miss Molly Lucked Out"

Molly's vet visit went a little better than expected, I was not sure we could treat her at all. The lab tests and x-rays showed that she does have a slight heart enlargement from the heartworms (no murmur), she does have some swelling in the arteries and vessels in the lungs, and elevated protein levels from the heartworms that are making her kidneys not work as well as they should. After being scared to death about her protein levels on her first test, the other two came out pretty good so we and Miss Molly lucked out.

On the plus side, she has gained 10 lbs and we could start the 4 injection heartworm treatment yesterday along with some antibiotics and steroids. Molly will be on a 'No exercise and no excitement' regimen for the next 7 weeks. Her immiticide injection yesterday should kill off about half of her adult heartworms and ease her suffering.

Her vet bill yesterday was $265.60. So far she is doing well and has even started eating a little bit. As long as there are no complications, we can do an additional 2 immiticide injections in a month and follow up with an ivermectin injection 3 weeks later. Her remaining injections, medications, and testing will cost at least $450.00.

"A Canine Dermatologist?"

Molly is interacting much better with the people in her daily life now. She is noticeably more 'perky' when any of her human friends comes to visit. She is presently on her second round of antibiotics for a skin condition that she has had - on top of everything else - since she was pulled from the shelter. We have an appointment for her to see a specialist - a canine dermatologist if you will - the first of the week. Hopefully they will be able to determine the proper treatments she will need to overcome this condition.

She is continuing to improve overall, even though she is still in the dangerous stage of her heartworm treatments. Therefore, she is being kept as calm and comfortable as possible. Her activity is being kept down to a minimum. She is eating well, and totally enjoying all the attention for her new human buddies.

"A Scary Road"

Molly is progressing, it's still a scary road we're traveling with this sweet lady. She is going back in to the vets this week for her second round of immiticide injections. She has been maintaining, but for the past couple of days she has been noticeably more lethargic than he has been. Hopefully, this is a temporary setback and will not hamper her recovery. The last round of injections theoretically could have killed off 50 % of the heartworms in the best case scenario. Although a more realistic figure would be near 25 or 30 %. Regardless, she is on the road, and she has met up with plenty of Samaritans along the way.

We ask that you keep Molly (and those like her) in your thoughts, maybe even find the time to say a little prayer for this sweet gal. The next few days are going to be tough on her.

Her skin condition is being treated also, and she is showing improvement, hopefully we can eliminate the itchiness and discomfort she has with that at least. That alone should make her feel somewhat better.

"Wait a week..."

Molly's second round of immiticide injections have been delayed till next week. Our hope is that the additional few days will give her a chance to further increase her energy levels so she will be able to better fight these nasty parasites. Please keep Miss Molly in your thoughts and prayers.

"She Needs A Few More Days..."

Molly's second round of immiticide injections have been delayed for yet another week as it stands now, we are looking at her next round of shots to be administered on the 7th of March.. Molly needs just a few more days of recuperation before undergoing the next round of heartworm treatments. Additionally her skin condition is flaring up again and we would like to get that under better control too. Please keep Miss Molly in your thoughts and prayers.

Round Two

Molly received her second round of heartworm treatments this week. These past few weeks have helped her tremendously, she has not only gained some much needed weight, but she has also become stronger and is able to tolerate the treatments better. While it's always a touch and go treatment we feel much better about our roller coaster ride with Miss Molly.

Additionally, we have a handle on Molly's skin condition - things have really started taking a good turn for this sweet lady. NCSBR would like to thank everyone for the thoughts and prayers, they are working for her. It's so rewarding to see her continue to improve.

"Cute, But Weird..."

Molly's panting, that started again after shots two and three, has stopped - but she is still very lethargic. This Friday will be two weeks after treatment so we will be out of the danger period for good. Her skin and the itching are flaring up again. Whatever is going on with her is unusual and they're just not catching it.

Molly is a very good girl. She is perfectly housebroken now and does not chew or jump on anything. She does lick the carpet - which is kind of cute, but weird.

Cleared For Adoption!

Molly has officially been cleared for adoption! This is the day a lot of us have been looking forward to for a long time. It brings a warm feeling inside to know that this sweet pup is going to have a real chance at finding that forever home. This wonderful lady has paid her dues in life, and she deserves a top notch family of her very own.

The Adoption

A bit over 16 weeks after Molly was pulled from that high kill shelter, she became part of that forever family everyone had told her about.

Molly now lives with a wonderful family in North Carolina. Hopefully we will receive updates on Molly in the coming months.
