Hearts and Paws provides a safe haven for rescued animals awaiting loving adoptive families.

Message from Toni Black, President of Hearts & Paws

All Hearts & Paws cats and foster dogs are tested for infectious disease, spayed or neutered, and are up to date on shots, according to age.

We charge a medical donation fee, which is returned if the animal doesn't work out with the new family.

We charge the donation to deter people who will answer free to good home ads only to sell the animal to a research lab for experimentation or being deserted without food or water. Starvation is a horrible way to die.

Let us be vigilant and protective of all those who can't speak for themselves — children and animals alike.

Placing healthy, happy and well-socialized animals into excellent homes was the goal of a handful of animal lovers. As a result, Hearths & Paws was created to provide a safe haven for rescued animals awaiting loving, adoptive families.

Our residents are mainly from neighboring shelters and rescue groups who are willing to work with us for the good of animals. Most are cats whose "time has run out", mothers with litters of babies, or orphaned kittens, whose proper care is particularly taxing for the short-staffed shelters to provide.

Once we accept a new resident, he or she is guaranteed a home for life. After a thorough vet exam, all animals are tested, given necessary shots, spayed/neutered, and given any care necessary for them to be in tip-top condition. Afterward, they enjoy the "freemdom of the house" to sleep or sleep, play and eat in a cageless environment.

Our prospective adopters visit by appointment only, and they must have excellent, verifiable vet references in order to be even considered. The adoptive animal must also be comfortable with them. If the adoption does not work out at any point in the future for whatever reason, the cat can be returned and the adoption fee will be refunded. This way we feel the companion animal will not be abandoned.

In addition, Hearts & Paws has been responsible for the altering of over 300 other animals in the past year. We have handed out child-oriented educational materials in the schools, and assisted pet owners who have fallen on hard times, providing food and care for their companion animals.

By the way, we are staffed by volunteers, no paid employees. We exist strictly by outside (public) donations and receive no government funding of any kind. With the publics help, we have rescued over 1900 cats in the last 6 yrs., and have spay & neutered and given medical assistance to countless others. Please help us to continue our mission.
