Success Stories
Many of us at PAHS are asked from time to time why we do what we do.
Here is an example involving a dog we named Bobby, who liked to wander.
Adopted to a nice home, he repeatedly escaped and eventually was
captured by local authorities. He was returned to us where he stayed
for an extended period. We all came to like Bobby.
Adopted once again, we didn't hear anymore about Bobby wandering.
Bobby's new family the Calauttis sent us this note...
"Dear Wonderful People At The PAHS
It has been over five years since we adopted Bobby and Cara, who we now
call Casey. Bobby has long since stopped his running away routine and
has realized what a great place this is to live. He is really not in
good shape now at the age of almost sixteen, those back legs can hardly
hold him up. The good news is that his appetite is still excellent and
he does not seem to be in pain. I will keep him going as long as
possible, until he can no longer get around. Casey on the other hand is
doing fine, she is somewhat of the leader of the other three dogs and
appears to be quite content living here. I am sending you this donation
to do with as you wish and want to thank you for all you do for all of
the animals. Without your help and hard work not many of them would be
alive now. So from all the dogs, we thank you.
Sincerely, Joseph Calautti"
That is why.
We receive many, many letters updating us with the status of our
adoptees. We love to hear from all the pets new families.
It really warms our hearts to know how much they are loved!
You'll find here but a few of those many letters, but please keep them
coming!

Petie
|
Dear Staff,
I am writing this letter to you to thank you for letting me adopt such a wonderful dog. About 5 years ago I adopted Petie as a 9 year old, and that was the best decision that I have ever made. He filled my life with laughter, joy, and just all around happiness. Everything he was and will always be, will forever be in my heart.
|
At the age of 14 Petie passed away on 5/2/08 due to old age complications. Petie had been through a lot in the past few years, from pancreatitis to developing a form of epilepsy. I thank god every day that we were able to medicate him to control his seizures. He was such a saint and now rests in peace. Now that he is gone I don’t know what to do with myself but I know that he would want me to be happy and not dwell over his passing.
I had to write this letter to you because I just wanted to let you what saints you are. Without people like you in this world, innocent animals would go with out loving homes and families. Animals that deserve a chance never get one without people like you in this world. Take for instance Petie, without you I would have never been able to adopt him and bring such a magnificent dog into my life. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Rachael Tobias

Robbie
with his best friends!

Hi! My name is Robby!
Two years
ago I was brought to PAHS. The staff at the Shelter said I was old -
like 13 or 14 years old! I didn't feel old. But everyone called me a
"senior."
I was lucky because, being a "senior," the staff at PAHS kept me in the
front office. I was too old to be with all the younger dogs. Sue and
everyone who worked at PAHS were great to me. They gave me lots of love
and attention. But I wanted more!
|
For two
years I listened daily as family after family walked through
the front door asking if there were any puppies or young dogs for
adoption. "What about me?" I would ask myself. I knew I was old, but in
my mind I only felt as if I were two or three years old. And I knew
that I could love a family as much as a puppy or young dog - EVEN MORE,
I thought!
"Look at
that old fella"....."He's so skinny"....."What happened to his
eye?".....I heard all those things as people walked past me to find
their "perfect" pet. I knew I had problems, and some days those
problems seemed really bad, but I still wanted to be part of a "real"
family and live in a "real" home and be loved as much as all the other
dogs were.
Then one afternoon something wonderful happened. A lady walked through
the front door and started talking to Sue. Sue put a leash on me, gave
me a hug and started to cry. "Why is she crying?" I wondered. I was
only going for a walk. But when we went outside the lady picked me up
and put me in her car. I couldn't figure out where I was going. We took
a long drive and finally arrived at the lady's house. "Why am I here?"
I thought. "I'm too old to be adopted." Then the lady took me inside
the house and there was a bowl of food and a giant fluffy dog bed all
for ME! Then three young children came into the room and gave me a big
hug! In fact, the oldest girl stayed with me that whole evening, I
think because she knew I was really scared. The first few nights were
tough for me and my new family. I kept waking up and walking around
trying to figure out where I was. Then, as the days and night passed, I
realized that I had gotten what all those younger dogs had - A FAMILY
OF MY OWN! A family that doesn't care that I am a "senior" or that I
only have one eye or that it's hard for me to get up and walk
sometimes. They love me unconditionally. And I love them even more! I'm
not going to live as long as a puppy or a young dog, but my family
doesn't care. My family knows that however long I live, they are giving
me what every pet deserves - a loving family regardless of age or
handicap.
I wanted to write this to give hope to all my "senior" friends at PAHS.
Don't give up because someday there will be a special family that will
see past your age and realize that adopting an older dog is just as
good or better than adopting a younger dog.
Thank you Sue and all the staff at PAHS. I miss seeing you, and I miss
all the treats that you spoiled me with, and I will never forget you.
You never gave up on me and, because of that, I am the HAPPIEST DOG IN
THE WORLD!

Dear Friends,
Almost four years ago, my fiance Paul and I came across a real scaredy
cat and he completely changed our lives. In February, 2002, we stopped
by the Plainfield Area Humane Society to adopt a cat. There, cowering
in the back of his cage, shaking and afraid, was Blackie.
Something in his eyes melted my heart and I reached in to pet him. He
wouldn?t even come to the door to be petted, much less to come out of
the cage to be held. But without further consideration, he was ours. We
renamed him Andy.
|
After we
took Andy home, he spent several weeks hiding under the bed and various
other pieces of furniture throughout the house. Our other cat, Maxene,
didn?t offer much of a welcome at first, hissing at him whenever he
came in sight. Four years later, Andy has undergone an amazing
transformation! Hiding? He doesn't know what that is anymore. He greets
everyone, family, friends, even strangers, by jumping up and making
himself comfortable on their laps. His favorite trick is to butt
visitors with his head until he gets a pet or scratch behind the ears.
He loves being with us and we love having him near.
Andy never would have become a part of our family if the Plainfield
Area Humane Society had not taken care of him for as long as it did
until a good home could be found for him. And we know we speak for many
families and individuals who have found special pets there, pets that
give love and companionship to them.
Sincerely,
Chris Krupka

Foxxy in her "Before" and "After" pictures
Amazing! |
Dear PAHS,
As you can see from the pictures, Foxxy is a happy, healthy girl. We
never dreamed back in March of 2002 that we would be the happy family
we are today and a lot of that happiness comes from Foxxy and her
seemingly endless capacity for love (and mischief!). We remain ever
grateful to PAHS and Dr. Karin Derfuss for saving that sick little
Shibu Inu and making our adoption possible. Thank you!!!
With Love,
Laura, Chad and Foxxy Steel
Note: Foxxy arrived at PAHS in horrible condition, and a
simple test for her thyroid and medication brought her into fine
condition. We're all very happy that she found her forever home! - the

Dear PAHS,
We adopted Jasmine in July
2000. She is five years old now and still running around like a kitten.
Thanks to all of you for the love and care you give the animals at
PAHS.
Sincerely,
Denise Halloran |

Dear PAHS,
Louie seems very happy in his new home and has no difficulty getting
around despite his vision problem. He is a wonderful dog - very
friendly and affectionate and always close by (he insists on sleeping
with me). I feel very lucky to have found him. He is my pal. Thanks for
giving me a very special dog. He will always have a home with me.
Sincerely,
Don Rice
P.S. He loves to ride in the car and we go out for breakfast every
morning. |

|
Dear Staff at PAHS,
Zoey adjusted so well and bonded almost instantly with me. I can't even
begin to tell you how much I am in love with her. I take her almost
everywhere with me. She is my constant companion. I feel as if we both
got a second chance at life and I am so very grateful to all who cared
for her. There is not a day that goes by where she doesn't give me a
laugh. I am truly enjoying this tiny dog who thinks she's a lion. Thank
you again for making our lives a whole lot brighter.
Sincerely,
Carol Kostick

Hello,
We have had Mary for over 2 years now and she is an inseparable part of
our family. Mary is a Plainfield alumnus and misses all of
you. We have absolutely no issues with her and our 9 month old at
all. In fact, once while Lily (our daughter) and Mary were spending the
night at our in-laws, everyone was awakened by a strange noise outside
the house. After Mary got up, she left her favorite spot (in the
bed with my inlaws, who, by the way never liked dogs, let alone
pitbulls, before meeting Mary) and spent the remainder of the night in
front of the crib, making sure Lily was OK.
We have had nothing but good experiences with our Mary and encourage
everyone we meet to adopt.
Thank you and keep up the good work.

Hi!
It has been a year since Melody introduced us to a skinny Rottweiler
who had been nicknamed by the workers "Head" because of his enormous
noggin.
Well, we wanted you to know that he is doing great, and Ozzie weighs in
at 130 lbs. He loves playing with his boxer sister Kia, and
chewing on his watering can, even though he has tons of real toys to
play with.
Thank you for introducing us, and keep up the good work!
Love
Tom, Kristin, Kia and Oz |

Dear PAHS,
It?s just past a year ago that I adopted my cats (then kittens) from
your Shelter. Nemo and Dorrie love each other very much, and are both
very affectionate with me as well. I want to thank you for taking care
of them and for all that you do to care for so many cats and dogs. I
feel blessed to have found Nemo and Dorrie!
Sincerely, Tara Hartmann

Zeke in our family and we hope to make him very happy. Zeke is very
well behaved and loves praise. He?s a perfect boy and we couldn?t ask
for a better addition to our family. Thanks again for the opportunity
to share our lives with such a wonderful dog.

To the kind and caring staff at
PAHS,
This is just a short note to extend a great big thank you to all of you
at PAHS! Although I was hit by a car and left for dead in the road, you
found me and brought me to the Branchburg Animal Hospital. I had a
broken leg and pelvis. Due to your swift action and great care you
saved my life, and I am only left with a limp when I walk.
Tux and I love our new home, and get along well with our new brothers
and older sister
Again, thank you so much, you all have a special place in my heart!

To the wonderful people at the
Plainfield Humane Society,
Here is a picture of our Emma (aka Pebbles) who was adopted on July 5,
2003.
She is a JOY and is very cautious and loving around our 4 month
old daughter. We can't believe someone could have given her up!
We just love her to death! Thank you for taking such good care of her,
you are all wonderful people!
Sincerely,
Tina McGrath
