A Bag of Special Dog Food will be a Big Help for Our Dogs with Allergies

As each animal enters the shelter, they bring a history that might be a mystery if they come in as strays. Our vet techs try to identify the weak, the ill or those with special needs due to allergies. We routinely have a few dogs who require special food to help them improve or regain health and vitality. We would like to continue to feed them one of the (Hypo-Allergenic) Natural Balance Brands; Sweet Potato & Venison Formula, Potato & Duck Formula, Sweet Potato & Fish Formula. We can use both dry and canned varieties. Please bring us a bag of this special food for some of our special dogs. It is available at most major pet food stores.

Can You Foster a Dog or Cat?

The need for foster "parents" to homeless animals is enormous at the shelter. There are pregnant dogs and cats who need to deliver their litters in safety and comfort; and the offspring needs to stay with the mother till they are weaned. There are frightened, emaciated animals who have never known the warmth of a home or the love of a human. There are injured or ill animals who need convalescence. There are old animals who need to spend the short time that they have left somewhere other than in a metal and concrete cage. And there are animals whose fate remains murky during drawn out court proceedings who lie listless and depressed for countless weeks, months and even years.

We see all of these situations and more at the Washington Area Humane Society. Foster homes give animals a huge advantage by providing a nurturing environment where they can be  socialized, overcome health and behavioral problems and avoid the stress of the kennels.

If you can help for a few days, a few weeks or a longer period, we implore you to sign up as a foster parent.

For more information on fostering, please call the shelter at 724-222-7387.

Can't Adopt an Animal but Would Love to Help One?

Sometimes the timing is not right, or the circumstances make it impossible to adopt a dog or cat who captures your heart.

Consider sponsoring a pet's adoption by purchasing a GET OUT OF JAIL FREE Card for that dog or cat who melts your heart. Choose an adoptable adult dog or cat, and pay their adoption fee (Dogs: $75.00 / Cats: $40.00). We will keep the card on file until someone chooses that dog or cat to adopt, fills out the application and is approved. Only then will they be told that their new best friend has a Get Out of Jail Free card, and when they ride out into the sunset together we will mail the card to you so you can share in the joy.

How? Why? No answer would be good enough for Minnie

Minnie was gently led into the shelter today by a man who plucked her off the side of a road in Bulger.

Despite bathing the terribly emaciated girl twice, the yellow stains from what must have been interminable time spent in a urine-soaked cage remained. At only 30 pounds, it is difficult to say what kind of dog she is except to say that she is about 4 years old.

What can be said about this amazingly sad dog is that she is trusting, despite the burns on her head, friendly, though surrounded by strangers and very sweet.

Her elbows and ankles have open sores and it is amazing that with so little meat on her bones she can even stand. Yet "Minnie" who would have every reason to fear people based on her apparent mistreatment is a shining star who has landed on our doorstep this Halloween, and we will treat her the best that we can.

We have found a foster home for Minnie where she can gain weight, regain her strength and never have to suffer like this again.

Cat and Dog Porcelain Ornaments Designed Exclusively for WAHS

By Artist-Illustrator, Susan Castriota, these double-sided, full-color, glazed, porcelain ornaments are approximately 2-1/2-in diameter and come with a ribbon hanger.

Sydney was brought to the shelter in February because the family was moving to a place that did not allow pets. Sydney, the cat, has since been adopted.

Patches and Goddard his buddy were surrendered when their family lost their home. Goddard was adopted soon after, and Patches waited a little bit longer for his forever home, but is there right now!

Ornaments are $15.00 each (includes tax, shipping and handling. Allow two weeks for delivery). All proceeds benefit WAHS.

It costs $1,500.00 per day to run the Washington Area Humane Society. That includes the utilities, building upkeep, medicine, food, cat litter, veterinarian services, gas and maintenance for our vehicles, insurance, postage, payroll, and everything else required to run a normal business.

We have no steady stream of income upon which we can rely. We rely on you.
That’s what the 1,500 Club is meant to be ... 1,500 people who donate a dollar a day all at one time. It’s a reliable way to secure our $500,000 annual budget so we won’t have to sweat the whole year deciding from day to day between whether to purchase flea and tick medicine or pay the water bill.

Become a member of an exceptional group of supporters who pledge a dollar a day annually to our Humane Society. Call 724-229-0404 to pledge your dollar a day. Or email: washahs@fyi.net. Or download the pledge form, and mail it back. You will be contacted during the last week of November to collect your tax-deductible pledge donation via check or credit card. Just a dollar a day from 1,500 animal-loving, caring people will do it to keep our shelter in business for another year.

All 1,500 Club WAHS members can attend and vote at the annual meeting.

Link for Love — A New Way of Connecting Business and Charity

Click Here for more details about our Linked for Love Business Program.

Link your business to a homeless dog or cat at the Washington Area Humane Society. Our animals may be in a kennel or cage for a long time while they wait for that special someone who will take them home forever.

Each adoptable dog and cat featured on our website is also featured on three other, much larger and well-recognized websites, who host our pet list: Petfinder (owned by Animal Planet), Adoptapet.com and Pets911.com. These sites are very popular and heavily utilized by potential adopters nationwide expanding the pool of people who view our animals ... and your link.

This program is geared to businesses who wish to be associated with one or more particular "adoptees" at our shelter through a promise of a donation to the shelter when that dog or cat is adopted. When your sponsored animal is viewed, your business website link [sample]and generous donation are seen by visitors.

Your sponsorship may be that little boost or incentive that potential adopters need to take a second look at a dog or cat at our shelter.

Donate a Bed

Our cats love to sleep on Kuranda cat beds, but we don't have enough for everyone. If you would like to donate a bed at a special wholesale price for another cat to sleep
in comfort, please donate a Kuranda cat bed. (donations are in sets of two)
