Casey was a very special little Shih-tzu who spent most of his life in a breeding kennel.
My husband drove to Missouri to get him, along with ten other former breeders.
We have rescued puppy mill dogs before but were shocked when we saw the condition of some of these dogs.
Casey was so matted he couldn't go to the bathroom without it sticking in his fur. But it wasn't until after we got him all cleaned up that we learned how sick he really was.
His teeth were rotted. He had heart, liver and kidney problems. He was covered with ticks, and he had probably had Lyme Disease for years.
He arrived early in the morning on June 2, 2000, and was taken directly to the vet that same day, where he spent the next two weeks because of his many problems.
All I ever wanted for Casey that he be able to enjoy his life, but it was never to be. After seeing a specialist I was told to just take him home and love him. There was nothing that could really be done for him.
He was on medication from that day on. He had to be force-fed and given sub-cutaneous fluids. He finally died in my arms on July 15, 2000.
Casey never had much in his life but he certainly was loved. I miss him so much and I regret that he never got the chance to run and play.
When is this horrible practice of farming puppies for profit going to end? We all see the cute faces of the puppies in the pet shop windows, but I have seen first hand the horror of the parents that are left behind in the mills.
