Action For Animals Humane Society Announces Executive Director Transition

The Board of Trustees of Action For Animals Humane Society (AFA) wishes to thank outgoing Executive Director Kathy Newill for her dedicated service. Ms. Newill began volunteering at AFA in 1994. Over the past 23 years, she has served multiple terms as Treasurer and also President of our all-volunteer Board before taking on the recent responsibility of creating and defining the part time Executive Director position as the Board began to transition into a less operational role. Her dedication, passion for the animals and loyalty to AFA have been inspiring. Ms. Newill founded the Angels program, developed the low cost spay/neuter program, created and chaired the annual Walk for the Animals the past 20+ years, served as emcee for every Cash Bash, and co-chaired the capital campaign that enabled the shelter to expand its programs and services as well as purchase and relocate to a state-of-the-art facility at its current location on Route 217. She has worked tirelessly to expand services and promote awareness of the good work the shelter does for our community through her involvement with volunteer programs, fundraising, social media outreach, youth and senior programs and general support. We hope you join us in wishing her well in her future endeavors.

To succeed Ms. Newill as Executive Director, the Trustees are pleased to announce the appointment of Margaret Martin. Ms. Martin impressed the Board's Search Committee with her decades of management experience, extensive technological skills and long history with AFA. Ms. Martin's extended partnership with AFA includes: working in our kennel caring for our shelter animals, volunteering as our network administrator, serving on our board of directors and volunteering her time at numerous AFA events. In addition to AFA, Ms. Martin has been active in the community, providing leadership and outreach for various community-based organizations. She currently co-chairs Lauren's Wing with Karen Thompson Highlands who is Lauren's Mother. Lauren's Wing is a subsidiary of AFA that provides funding for lifesaving veterinary surgeries. Please join us in warmly welcoming Ms. Martin as she begins her new role at AFA.

Ms. Newill and Ms. Martin have already begun the transition, ensuring that the day-to-day operations of AFA continue to run smoothly. The Board of Trustees is incredibly grateful to both these women for being passionate supporters of the work we have done since 1983 to provide care for the abused, abandoned and stray dogs and cats of Westmoreland County and beyond.
