Who We Are

The Humane Society of McCormick County is a private, non-profit, no-kill organization formed in September 2000. We are staffed entirely by volunteers who raise every cent of our operating capital ourselves. Our rural county is a very poor county in South Carolina. Statistically 54% of the county's population is at the federal income poverty level or below.

Spay - NeuterMcCormick County does not allocate any money for shelter or even an animal control officer.

We are all our county has for any help with animals.

We approach this problem through our "No more litters... fix your critters" low cost spay/neuter program. We altered a total of 388 dogs and cats in 2014! (197 McCormick County owned dogs and cats free of charge to those who qualified for it, 137 HSMC rescues, and 95 trap-neuter/spay-release.)

HSMC Awarded Prestigious Angel Award by South Carolina
The Angel Award was awarded because the HSMC devotes over 95% of its expenditures to its programs. The HSMC has no paid staff and relies solely on the generosity and hard work of its volunteers and supporters. It receives no financial support from any government organizations.

Our Goals

The Humane Society of McCormick County is an advocate for animals by speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Our main goals include:

  • prevention of cruelty to animals
  • providing shelter and care for lost and unwanted animals
  • educational programs and services that promote responsible pet ownership
  • educating the public of the importance of animal population control
  • and ultimately placing animals in humane and loving homes

If anyone would like to help with this venture please contact us. Together, we can improve the lives of the people and animals of McCormick County.

Adopting a friend

The adoptable animals in our care urgently need a permanent home where someone can provide individual loving care and attention.

Please consider adopting your family pet from the Humane Society of McCormick County.

Our basic requirements are:

  • Paying a standard adoption fee
    • $90 for dogs.
    • $60 for cats.
  • Signed adoption agreement assuring you will provide proper care.
  • Every animal has been given all appropriate vaccinations.
  • Every animal that is old enough has been spayed/neutered.

Contact us by phone or e-mail as noted below to arrange to visit any of our animals or watch the Upcoming Events section for our adoption days - where we take some of our dogs to various locations around McCormick County. Directions to our standard locations are located on the Events page.
