Hurricane Ike

We’ve
all seen the damage resulting from Hurricane Ike, and most of
us in the area are feeling the effects. We sincerely hope you have not
received any damage to your communities and that you are all safe and
well. Because ATDR is a statewide organization, our helping
hands reach into many communities across Texas. With
the recent severe weather brought about by Hurricane Ike and Gustav
that preceded Ike, ATDR has been inundated with requests to take in
dachshunds from shelters in the Texas bay
area. ATDR answered the call to assist as shelters prepared
to close and evacuate in the Houston
and Galveston
area. Of the displaced animals taken in, ATDR has received
dachshunds from Texas City,
Brazoria
County,
Galveston,
and Rockport, taxing our already overloaded foster homes.
This has created a hardship for the organization financially, and is a
difficulty for our foster parents, who are busy with cleanup and
reparations of their own. Money normally devoted to the care
and feeding of their fosters must now be dedicated for storm repairs,
which means there is little left for the care of these additional
fosters. ATDR could really use your help with some of these
new foster expenses as soon as you are able to give. Thank
you from all the animals who were kept safe and sound through their
ordeal.
If you can help us
with a donation to help defray additional costs the organization is
incurring at this time, please use the donation button below.
THANK
YOU!

Pixie
Left in a backyard with a
medical condition that was untreated, Pixie was slowly starving to
death. When her owner was approached about letting someone
else have her, the answer was "Yes, all she does is throw up anyway."

| Maddie |
|
Maddie is a loving little 4-5 year old
piebald girl. When she was surrendered to ATDR we were told she had
arthritis. Our vet evaluated Maddie and discovered her issues
are much more serious. She has a birth defect causing her front paws to be deformed, forcing her to walk on top of her "wrists". This places strain on her back and has
resulted in arthritis. She's been on crate rest for several weeks and
is making some progress. She also is feeling well enough to
let her foster Mom know when she wants to be held, and if Maddie had
her way it would be 24/7! She has a wonderful appetite and is
slowly gaining weight. Some injection treatments have been
done along with ongoing medication for the inflammation and discomfort.
Our vet recommends a regimen of acupuncture treatments and after just a
few treatments Maddie is already showing improvement. Check back for updates!
Update: September 24, 2008 - Maddie had her acupuncture treatment today and due to Hurricane Ike we were 1 week behind. The good news is they really noticed the difference in her. She sits well and even tried to walk off the exam table! She doesn’t enjoy the acupuncture treatments and tries to wiggle out of the needles, however she certainly likes her treats afterwards and has earned the nickname "Little Piggy Girl". The vet took her off one prescription altogether and cut another in half. She continues to take an herbal supplement for the spine. She has become quite vocal when she wants to go out or enjoy her frequent “snuggle times” with her foster mom.

Annalese
|
| Annalese
is a precious 1 year old dachshund who weighs just 7.2
pounds! She is incredibly cute and sweet and
playful! Her "family" took her to a shelter because she has a
condition known as "Dry Eye" and they didn't want to deal with
it. Their loss for sure, because Annalese is a total
sweetheart and everyone who meets her falls in love! Until we
can raise the funds to pay for surgery, Annalese's foster mom cleans
her eye with a warm damp cloth & applies lubricant twice
daily. An Ophthalmologist in Austin will do the surgery for
$850 (20% discount). If you'd like to make a tax deductible
donation Annalese would be so grateful! |
