NAMC Adoption Information:Site Bios. Availability changes daily, and this site is only updated once a week, so please visit the shelter in person to confirm availability and to make sure you get to meet everyone! You can't really know a dog's or cat's personality until you have interacted with them...please find a staff member or volunteer to help you meet that animal outside of the cage. Give him/her a few minutes to sniff around and get settled, and then you'll really see his/her true personality! Please remember that each animals' primary identification is his/her 8-digit case number.
Availability. Owner surrenders are available for adoption the day they arrive at the shelter. Strays with no collar are held for 5 days before they may be adopted; strays with a collar are held for 10 days. During the hold period, you may go to the front desk and sign up as one of three "choices" on the animal. On the day the animal is available, the adoption paperwork can be finalized. Please note that the shelter does not put holds on animals.
Adoption Criteria. The following documents are needed to adopt an animal: proof of current residence; if you rent, rental agreement clause allowing pets (and proof that pet deposit has been paid); if you have other resident pets, current Rabies certificate for each pet; if you are a resident of Norfolk with resident pets, proof that each pet has a current pet license. Please note that our shelter cannot adopt Pit Bulls, and some Pit Bull mixes, to families with children under the age of 10.
Pre/Post Adoption Questions. If you would like help in selecting an animal that is right for your home, have questions after you have adopted an animal, or have general questions about dog or cat behavior, please contact Supervisor Winston.
