Spay/Neuter Program

The Bedford Humane Society provides low cost spay/neuter services for area residents by hosting transports from the  South Central Spay Neuter Clinic (located in Evington) and the Angels of Assisi Mobile Spay Neuter shuttle (headquartered in Roanoke).  Through grants and other funding, we subsidize the cost of spay/neuter surgeries for the pets of income-qualifying Bedford County/City residents.     EVENTS MEET IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE BEDFORD TRACTOR SUPPLY, NEXT TO BEDFORD WALMART.

In cooperation with Bedford County government, we also provide subsidized spay/neuter pricing for animals adopted from the Bedford County Animal Shelter.  Occasionally, spay/neuter events are held at the shelter on Falling Creek Road, next to the Sheriff's Dept.

You must make an appointment by completing the Spay/Neuter Appointment Application (below).  Please mail the completed application, supporting paperwork for income eligibility, and your payment to the address shown on the application.  The Bedford Humane Society Spay/Neuter Coordinator will contact you as soon as possible after receiving your application to schedule your appointment, review the process with you and answer any questions you may have.

For safety reasons, there are a few exceptions to the types of animals who are eligible for surgery at our events:

  • Aggressive dogs
  • Sick animals.  (runny eyes, nasal discharge, diarrhea, skin infections, etc. )
  • Dogs & cats that are nursing, producing milk, lactating.  Wait 2-3 weeks after weaning puppies/kittens to schedule surgery.
  • The South Central clinic will not accept dogs that are in heat cycle,  pregnant dogs and cats close to birthing, or male dogs with only one testicle visible.
  • Dogs over 7 years old or over 75 pounds are not eligible for surgery at these mobile events.  These pets may be sterilized at full service veterinary practice, or at the clinics in Evington or Roanoke. (see phone #s at bottom of page).
  • Underweight/underage.  Puppies/kittens must be 2 months of age or older and must weigh at least 2 pounds.  All animals must be at least 3 months old to receive a rabies vaccination.
  • Cats or dogs with heart murmers.
  • Obese animals.

Feral (Wild) cat resources:

Like many people, you may be concerned about wild cats, also known as 'ferals', in your neighborhood.  Are they breeding and adding to the pet overpopulation crisis?  We loan traps for the purpose of humanely capturing these cats so that they can be spay/neutered and returned to their outdoor homes.  Feral cats can be brought to our transports without an appointment.

To borrow a trap:

Please call Sarah at 540-597-8268

A $50 deposit and loaner contract are required
