Adoption Process
All adoptions may be subject to a 24-72 hours adoption process.
The first step in adopting one of our animals is to meet your potential new family member.
Please come see all of the adoptable dogs and cats
Saturdays from 12pm-5pm at the Petsmart in Stafford, Virginia.
Applications, interviews, and adoptions can be arranged outside our adoption events. This is done on a case-by-case basis. Click here for info on special adoption arrangements.
Map to our adoption event
When you come to our event, fall in love, and want to adopt, the following will occur:
You will need to fill out the appropriate application and contract.
Dog Application
Dog Contract
Cat Application
Cat Contract
We will verify your vet reference and 2 personal references.
We reserve the right to do a home check either before the adoption or after you have taken your new pet home.
If references are unable to be checked during the adoption event, a time will be scheduled for you to
take home your new family member once you are approved. In most cased this will be the next adoption event.
Please note that we do not hold pets. Unless it is determined that you are approved, pet selection will need to wait until you are an approved adoptive home.
Our adoption reimbursement fees are: $250 for dogs / $175 for cats.
Older & special needs pets have reduced adoption reimbursement fees, depending on each individual case.
All our animals are up-to-date on their vaccinations. They are screened for any major health problems
that are detectable by conventional veterinary examination. The animals in our care are
spayed or neutered, dewormed, brought current on shots, treated for any detected illnesses, and have appropriate
blood screening tests (FeLV/FIV test for cats; heartworm test for dogs over 6 months old). Dogs are immediately
placed on monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventatives.
If the pet is unaltered at the time of adoption, the adoption reimbursement fee will still be $250.00/$175.00.
The difference will be that $75.00 of the adoption reimbursement fee will be a deposit. The contract will require proof of the
spay/neuter within a designated time depending on the age of the animal. Besides being a contractual requirement
to spay/neuter, it is also a Virginia State law that all animals adopted from a releasing agency are required to
be altered within 30 days if sexually mature or within 30 days of when they reach 6 months of age. This requirement
is pursuant to subsection B of 3.1-796.126:1 of Virginia State Code.
You can choose to use your private
veterinarian or make arrangements with us to participate in our low-cost spay and neuter program and apply the $75.00 deposit towards the spay/neuter. If you choose
your private veterinarian your $75.00 deposit will be refunded when you provide proof of spay/neuter. In order
to receive the refund, the spay/neuter will need to be completed by the date designated on the contract. Details
of these requirements and how to participate in our low-cost spay and neuter program will be provided at the time
of adoption.
